I'm very surprised it kinda wrapped up in one episode, and we never saw how her son, Jason dealt with it in the long run. Mind you, I think as soon as Aida
aka Janice came into the show, Lorraine Bracco was gradually and eventually sidelined.

in a way- it didn't really resolve in that one epi because in subsequent episodes, most of us kept wondering for awhile if more would come of it, secretly
hoping Tony or someone could get revenge on employee of The Month guy. Not exactly outta sight outta mind. But by not seeking revenge thru Tony (the quickest
and easiest reaction), Melfi can claim victory by choosing the harder road of re-claiming her life regardless of what happens to the perp. There is no earthly
justice.

The character of Melfi is one of the few that are ever-present in the show, from series 1 up to the very last episode. There are times when she doesn't feature so much, but that is just the nature of her relationship with Tony. How many times has he "had enough of this" or " it's over, I'm done with this" etc? We only see Melfi because she is involved in Tony's life, whereas Jancie will always be his sister. Even then though when she leaves after killiing Ritchie, we don't see her again until Livia dies and Jan comes back for good, with her eye on the house and whatever money there might be lying around. Every character is peripheral to Tony and is only as important as they are to him. As for the question of Dr. melfi's rape, I don't think it was resolved too quickly, for the reasons stated above. By not telling Tony of the rape, it can't and doesn't feature as a story-line. Becasue Tony doesn't know about it. WE do. And we know of Melfi's dilemma. But by not doing the easy but morally bankrupt thing, she has risen above the rest of us. |
